EL CAMINITO DEL REY – THE KING’S PATH

The Caminito del Rey is a via ferrata with impressive

walkways and very steep walls

The Caminito del Rey route is an excellent option to enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes of the impressive Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. This road is located in the province of Malaga. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the walls of the Gaitanes canyon in order to move construction materials and build the Conde de Guadalhorce dam. This infrastructure was rehabilitated and opened its way to the public in 2015.

The Caminito del Rey is a via ferrata that has impressive walkways, a suspension bridge over 100 meters high over the Guadalhorce River and with very steep walls. The route is made in one direction, you enter through the northern access area (Ardales) and exit through the southern access area (Álora). Almost the entire path is downhill, although there are ups and downs.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROUTE OF THE CAMINITO DEL REY

You have to walk 7.7 km in total to complete the Caminito del Rey route, of which 4.8 km we will have to walk to and from the entrance and exit entrances. Only 2.9 km exist from the entrance through the control booth to the exit, of which 1.5 km are walkways and 1.4 km belong to forest tracks. This footbridge in some sections is barely 1 m wide, but since its reform in 2015 they have prepared these sections with great security.

The estimated time to complete the tour ranges from 3 to 4 hours. This path is linear. If we choose to reach the southern access, we have to go to the entrance from the north by walking or with the shuttle bus service to the south (El Chorro, Álora). On the other hand, if we arrive at the northern access (Ardales), at the end of the tour we leave through the south so we will have to return to the north on foot or with the bus service. Trips are available every 15 to 30 minutes. And here we can help you to know how to get to Caminito del Rey.

Any time is good to take a guided tour of the Caminito del Rey, as it is open to the public every day of the year except Monday, and on public holidays, January 1 and December 24, 25 and 31, or on that there are winds exceeding 35 km / h. Regarding the schedule, there are 2 established seasons: the winter season (from November to the end of March) that opens from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the summer season (from April to the end of October), in this the schedule is extended until 5:00 p.m.

Keep in mind that you have to travel a considerable distance to complete the entire route. In part of this, we will be exposed to heights greater than 100 m and taking into account that some parts are narrow, many people may feel a sensation of vertigo. But it must be emphasized that the route is totally safe.

We invite you to live this wonderful experience, which is unforgettable because it is an activity that takes place in direct contact with nature. Without a doubt, completing the Caminito del Rey route is one of the most exciting and attractive experiences you can do.
