The Costa del Golf is located in the south of Spain, in the Andalusian province of Malaga. It thanks its name to the fact it has the highest concentration of golf courses in Europe.
The Costa del Golf came into the limelight in 1926, when the first golf course, the Royal Club del Campo, was founded. (Nowadays it is known as “Parador del Golf de Málaga”, Malaga’s Golf Inn). From that moment on, golf lovers found their way to the Costa del Sol every year and as their numbers increased year after year, the authorities built more and more golf courses. As a result, the Spanish South coast today welcomes more than 70 golf courses, where both professionals and amateurs train every day.
The first and main reason why the Costa del Golf is so popular among golfers is because of its location on the Costa del Sol. As the name suggests, you can enjoy an average of 300 sunny days per year, making it the ideal location for outdoor sports, including golf. The temperature is pleasant all year round and the rainfall is very limited. However, the best months for a round on one of the numerous golf courses on the Costa del Golf are May, June, and September, as the golf courses in July and August are very busy.
Another reason for the popularity of the Costa del Golf is its connection to the rest of Spain and Europe, especially thanks to the international airport of Malaga, the fourth largest airport in Spain. For these reasons, it is the scene of many golf competitions every year, including a few tournaments of the PGA European Tour.
Can you think of a better place than the Marbella golf courses to practice this sport?
The Golf Valley of Marbella is the ultimate paradise for golf aficionados. It invites you to enjoy a round of golf at any time of the year. Nueva Andalucia proudly displays some of the most popular golf courses in the region including the Los Naranjos Golf, Las Brisas Golf, Aloha Golf, Magna Marbella Golf, and neighbouring La Quinta Golf, all offering excellent facilities and stunning scenery.
The Dama de Noche, the first 24-hour golf course in Europe was closed for business in 2017, but has reopened as a golf School by the Marbella International Golf Center.
The prestigious flagship courses Las Brisas, Aloha, and Los Naranjos draw golf enthusiasts globally and host international tournaments. They boast pristine fairways, captivating landscapes, and mesmerizing Mediterranean vistas, ensuring an unmatched golfing experience. Their Clubhouses, restaurants and vibrant social life confirm that golf is much more than just sport.
Nueva Andalucia is also known as the Golf Valley of Marbella. It is home to the La Quinta Golf Club, Aloha Golf Club, Las Brisas Golf Club, Los Naranjos Golf Club, and the Magna Marbella Golf Club.
The Los Naranjos Golf Club, skilfully designed by legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. and inaugurated in 1977, is famous for its spectacular golf course of classic design, relaxed atmosphere of its Club and popular restaurant, and the high-end properties. The 18-hole, par-72 course is situated below magnificent La Concha Mountain amidst fragrant orange trees. It has hosted esteemed competitions throughout its history, like the Spanish Open, and earned recognition as one of Spain’s finest courses. Its excellence was acknowledged when it received the accolade of the best course of the year in both 2005 and 2008. To access this impressive course, players can become members of the golf club or opt for the Green Fee Rate, available in Low Season, High Season, and Mid-Season categories.
As for the Las Brisas Golf Course, later Real (royal) Club de Golf Las Brisas, it holds a prominent position in Spain’s Top 100 courses, ranked at number 6, and occupies the number 24 spot in Continental Europe. It was founded in 1968 by José Banús himself, who was appointed its first President until 1981. Ambitious Don José wanted the best. He invited world-famous Robert Trent Jones Sr. who had just finished creating the Sotogrande golf course, and after Las Brisas went on to design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. Gerald Huggan, a famed world specialist in plants, was commissioned to design the landscaping. Today, the exotic species native to Africa, Australia, Asia, and South America, and numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees coexist in harmony, turning the golf course into a stunning botanic garden. Reconstructed by Kyle Phillips in 2015, the course has seen its fair share of golf tournaments, including the International Spanish Open. To play on this jewel in the golfing crown of the Costa del Sol course, individuals must gain membership approval from the Las Brisas Golf Club, a process that can be found on their website.
La Dama de Noche Golf. The first 24 hour golf course ever to be opened in Europe, La Dama de Noche (aptly named ‘Lady of the Night’ in Spanish) is a must for anyone who gets the urge to play golf at the oddest hours.
But how can this work at night? Well, the course’s lighting system has been designed to give out a daylight quality with maximum visibility and casts no shadows. The 9-hole, 72-par course was built in 1991 and is situated close to the party town of Puerto Banus. So when you’ve had enough of the hustle and bustle of the port, just head a few minutes inland and soak up the peace and tranquillity with a round of your favourite sport in the small hours.
The Magna Marbella Golf Course, a scenic 9-hole long course masterfully crafted by José María Elguezábal, also offers a welcoming Driving Range. Unlike some other courses, membership is not mandatory to enjoy this course or the driving range, as players can simply purchase a Green Fee for either 9-holes or 18-holes to partake in the golfing experience. The Magna Marbella facilities are equally impressive, featuring amenities such as the Magna Café restaurant, sauna, gym, and more. Magna Café offers not only excellent food but also stunning views of the golf courses, mountains, sea, the Rock of Gibraltar and the African coastline. A great neighbourhood to live in!
