With a global reputation for glitz and glamour and the warmest climate in all of Europe, Marbella has transformed from a once quiet fishing village, into a luxurious international tourist destination, attracting the rich and famous from all over the world.
Marbella is culture, leisure and glamour, it is one of the most exclusive cities of the Mediterranean and the pride and joy of the Costa del Sol. Twenty-five kilometres of coastline, four marinas, sixteen golf courses and an excellent climate make Marbella an incomparable destination. This may be why Julio Iglesias, Antonio Banderas, Claudia Schiffer and the Obama family (just to name a small selection of celebrities you meet here) did not think twice when they chose Marbella as their holiday home. Visiting Marbella is a unique experience. You can go shopping in luxurious boutiques, dine in distinguished restaurants or have fun in the beach clubs. The possibilities are limitless. But if you want to relax first and foremost, you can go to one of the twenty sea therapy and fun centres and take advantage of the first-class hotels available in the three main centres: Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara and Nueva Andalucía-Puerto Banús.
Quite simply, Marbella has it all. A perfect microclimate, with more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Europe, but without the extreme heat of the interior. The best restaurants south of Paris, the most stylish and diverse choice of residence, state-of-the-art infrastructure, miles of sandy beaches, a vibrant social life and a magnificent hinterland in which a vast range of sporting and leisure activities can be enjoyed all year round.
Lifestyles: Marbella feels the excellence
Several millennia before Christ, human settlements already existed in the Sierra Blanca region of Marbella, as evidenced by the Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts and human remains discovered on its slopes.
Recent discoveries indicate that around the 7th century BC, eastern peoples (Phoenicians and Punic) settled in the Río Real area.
The presence of Rome in our area is demonstrated by numerous remains, such as the Roman Villa of Río Verde, the Roman Baths of Las Bóvedas, also known as Guadalmina, and various finds in the Old Town.
The first references to Marbella are found in the texts of Muslim geographers and travelers of the Middle Ages.
During the Islamic period, Marbella became a walled city. The Muslims built a castle and surrounded the city with a powerful fence with three entrances or gates: “del Mar”, “de Ronda”, and “de Málaga”. The remains of the Castle are preserved.
After the Reconquista and throughout the 16th century, Marbella’s urban structure underwent significant changes. The center of the Muslim “Medina” (today the “Old Town”) was demolished to open a square (“Plaza Mayor” or “Real,” now “Plaza de los Naranjos”) and a “Nueva” street to connect it with the “Puerta del Mar” (Sea Gate).
During the 19th century, with the installation of the first blast furnaces in Spain, in El Ángel and La Concepción, to exploit the iron from the Sierra Blanca mines, Marbella joined the industrialization movement in Málaga, becoming the second-largest industrial province on the Iberian Peninsula.
Seventy years ago, Marbella was a farming and fishing town with a mining industry and 10,000 inhabitants; today, the registered population is over 147,663, not including the floating population.
Marbella covers an expansive 117 square kilometres (45 sq mi) and stretches 44 kilometres (27 mi) along the coast. While its land area is similar to medium-sized cities, Marbella’s coastal location and proximity to Málaga give it a vibrant, large-city feel, drawing significant tourism and economic activity.
The climate in Marbella is significantly influenced by the presence of the Mediterranean Sea. This proximity controls the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere, creating a mild and pleasant climate during the winter.
Marbella’s proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar creates an exchange between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea due to the two major currents that converge. This influences the water temperature along the Costa del Sol, with water temperatures somewhat cooler than the rest of the Spanish coast.
In Marbella, the temperature is ideal for most of the year, with an average of 18°C that rarely drops below 5°C during the early morning hours on a winter day. The Sierra Blanca, located behind the coast, protects the area from external influences, thus favoring the microclimate found only in Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol.
During the summer, temperatures in both Marbella and Puerto Banús are higher, reaching up to 40°C on some days in July and August. Therefore, we recommend using sunscreen if you visit Marbella during these months.
When we talk about Marbella and Puerto Banús, we cannot forget that their climate has greatly contributed to their popularity on the Costa del Sol, making them one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
Marbella’s city centre is a lively and comprehensive area, offering a wide range of attractions. Surrounding areas like The Golden Mile, Puente Romano, Sierra Blanca, and Río Real also offer diverse options. However, there are some must-visit stops that define downtown’s identity and are worth exploring.
The Old Town. The Old Town of Marbella is a charming labyrinth of narrow streets, vibrant flower-filled squares, and picturesque whitewashed houses. This historic district is rich with attractions, including one of the most stately streets of the 19th century: Calle Ancha. This thoroughfare once served as a vital connection between the city centre and the northern area, where farmhouses (“alquerías” in Arabic) were located, supporting agricultural and livestock activities. A must-visit spot is the balcony of Casa Correa, located at number 18 Calle Ancha, offering the perfect vantage point for capturing a memorable photo. When venturing further into the Old Town, a stop at the Plaza de los Naranjos is mandatory. This vibrant square boasts charming bars, a captivating Renaissance fountain, and access to the Ermita de Santiago, the city’s oldest religious temple. From there, continue the journey to Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, a 16th-century Baroque church housing the Sol Mayor Organ, a masterpiece designed to resonate classical music in sacred spaces and considered one of Spain’s finest. Then, take a stroll along the ancient fortress walls, the murallas de la antigua Alcazaba, built between the 11th and 12th centuries during the reign of Abderraman III.
Mercado Municipal de Marbella. Every day (except Sundays) from 8 am to 3 pm, the market opens to those who want to explore the bustling ambience. From butchers and fishmongers to greengrocers and regional product stalls, it is a haven for culinary enthusiasts seeking fresh, high-quality ingredients. Engage with passionate vendors, eager to share their knowledge and expertise, ensuring the selection of the finest ingredients for culinary creations. Experience the vibrant atmosphere while mingling with locals and fellow market-goers. Take a moment to pause and savour a delicious bite, perhaps accompanied by a glass of local wine, creating an unforgettable gourmet experience.
La Avenida del Mar (Avenue of the Sea). This open-air art gallery is home to 10 bronze sculptures made from the original moulds of various pieces created by Dalí, framed by stunning views of the Mediterranean. The sculptures are located along the avenue that stretches between Alameda Park and the sea.
Alameda Park. This spot is a perfect place for a stroll in the shade of ficus, pine, and araucaria palm trees, as well as the shade-providing plane trees, planted between the 1910s and 1920s. In addition to being a leisure space with a children’s playground, it often hosts cultural events.
Marbella Marina. Visiting it is an unforgettable experience, with the beautiful sight of sailboats juxtaposed against the city skyline. This vibrant centre extends far beyond the realm of water sports, offering a collection of attractions, from children’s play areas to lively bars and beach clubs. As the sun dips, the marina transforms into a lively scene of live music and entertainment.
Waterfront Promenade. Next to the marina, the Paseo Marítimo is a charming waterfront promenade perfect for leisurely strolls. Whether soaking up the sun during the day or enjoying a moonlit evening breeze, it’s an ideal spot for a relaxed escape, especially during the long, warm summer evenings.
Marbella’s Old Quarter, also known as the Casco Antiguo, gives visitors a taste of Spain at its core. The Old Town’s most famous area is the Plaza de los Naranjos, translating to Orange Square, where one can find a range of restaurants which hold a lovely ambiance. Around this square stands a 15th century fountain, a 16th century town hall and a 17th century church – you will be in the heart of history. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing stroll, a visit to unique stores or a taste of Spain, the Old Quarter is the place to be.
Marbella’s Avenida del Mar connects the Old Town with the promenade, and features a wide pedestrian zone that serves as an open-air museum. Lining the square is a collection of sculptures by Salvador Dali which are free to enjoy, and lining the square one can find many tapas bars and cosy cafes.
The beauty of Marbella is that it is a great place to visit at any time of year, depending on what it is you seek. For an active beach holiday, the summer months are a natural bet. This is when the weather is at its peak, and an influx of tourists leads to many great establishments to be open until later, as well as many parties. For a relaxing sports holiday, spring or autumn may be better; as the temperatures comfortably allow a lot of time to be spent outdoors. Winter months are quiet in Marbella, yet enjoyable nonetheless.
Marbella prioritizes the safety and security of its residents and visitors, implementing various measures to ensure a peaceful and secure environment. The city benefits from a high concentration of police stations, ensuring prompt and effective assistance in case of emergencies.

It’s also highly regarded for its cleanliness and facilities and has been awarded the Blue Flag. If you want to add a touch of history to your visit, head to the ancient Ladrones beacon tower next to the small parking lot. It dates back to Roman times and has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

Santa María Golf & Country Club is considered one of the most exquisite and emblematic courses in Marbella. It boasts a spectacular location, mostly devoid of buildings and with an 18-hole course immersed in a lush pine forest and cork oak forest. The first 9 holes were designed by Mr. Antonio García Garrido and the course soon became one one of the favorites of a large number of golf players who decided to become members.
